Criteria before changing discs

Before changing them, remember to take into account the different technical parameters of your discs.

The size

The larger the diameter of the discs, the more powerful the braking. However, the bigger it is, the heavier it is!

The diameters range from 140 to 203 mm. The most common size for city bikes, hybrid bikes, gravel or racing bikes is 160 mm. The large sizes (180-200 mm) are intended more for mountain biking and downhill competition.

Fixation

There are two standards for attaching the disc to the rim hub. Assembly 6 screws which logically is fixed thanks to six screws (A) or Center Lock which is fixed thanks to a central nut (B). There are disc adapters that convert 6-hole discs to Center Lock. The thickness of discs if it may appear identical to the eye is not standardized. Ranging from 1.7 mm to 2 mm depending on the brand, we recommend that you do not combine brake calipers and discs of different brands.

The type of discs

The geometry of the disc has two variations, one classic one-piece or a second called floating. It consists of two parts, one outside (for the braking track) and a central one fixed by bushings. This system allows greater resistance and expansion for intense braking.

Wear

Riding with a worn disc can be dangerous. Disc brake calipers are designed to wear the pads, not the disc itself. But inevitably the disc ends up deteriorating following the many requests. The recommended maximum wear value is 10% to 20% of the original thickness. We recommend that you refer to the manufacturer's documentation.
