A (simple) broken spoke can have a big impact on your rim

A broken spoke may seem trivial… You have 35 others that will do their job so why change them. It is theoretically possible to ride (and get home) without a spoke, but it is not recommended to take your bike for a long ride. A simple small spoke can quickly deteriorate your wheel.

A broken spoke unbalances the rim tension. Quickly, it is others who cause your rim to break and become HS. This also causes the wheel to run out and all the problems that ensue. Pads that rub, bike that shakes at normal speed, loss of power...

Some parameters to take into account before changing spokes:

The Length : Be sure to choose a radius of the same size as the broken one. Neither too short (it would not join the hub to the rim) nor too long (it would protrude and cause punctures)

The diameter (Ø) : between 1.6 mm 2.3. The larger it is, the more resistant it is (and a little heavier).

The material : The vast majority of rims are fitted with stainless steel spokes. They are sturdy and rigid. There are also aluminum, titanium and carbon for competition rims.

To refit the spoke, you need to remove the tyre, the inner tube and the rim tape. Sometimes you have to shake your rim to get the spoke head out, which is stuck in it. Check the number of crossed spokes carefully, if it passes below or above the other spokes. Once in place, tension the spoke with a spoke wrench.
